LCHS’s math team educates students on subjects from algebra to financial math. They work to prepare students for high-stakes standardized tests, real life math and post-secondary education.
Mrs. Theresa Johnston has taught math and yearbook for 27 years. She also teaches painting at 4-H camp and a water aerobics class at the Lewis County Park.
Johnston graduated from West Virginia University with a Master’s in Education Leadership. She loves Disney World; she did her senior term paper on it.
“I would like to work there,” Johnston said.
Mrs. Ciara Davis-McCloy is the National Honor Society advisor and is in her ninth year at LCHS. She earned her Bachelor of Science in mathematics and Master’s in Education: secondary math degrees at WV Wesleyan College and is currently a graduate student at WVU for her master’s in economics.
She is passionate about baking and reading; so far, she has read over 50 books this year.
Davis said her favorite part of her job is “watching students who think they are not good at math learn that they can do math.”
On his second year of teaching math at LCHS, Mr. Randall Roy’s favorite thing about his job is the lightbulb. He tends to break out in song and enjoys cool fall mornings and the color blue.
He was an administrator at Buckhannon Upshur High School for 16 years. He currently coaches football for the Bucs, and he taught at BU for 18 years. Roy earned his bachelor’s degree in math and his master’s in school administration.
“I very much enjoy teaching again,” Roy said.
Mr. Frank Stenger has taught geometry for about one fifth of a year. He earned his Bachelor’s of Science degree in petroleum engineering. Stenger likes rocks, crystals and hiking.
Stenger said, “It’s about the journey, not the destination.”
With math being as wide a spectrum as it is, LCHS has a team of four to cover its fields.
